Increase Your Home’s Energy Efficiency with New Exterior Doors

By August 15, 2022 No Comments

Did you know that the average home loses 30% of its heating and cooling energy through air leaks around exterior doors and windows? This means that 30% of the money you are putting into heating or cooling your home is going right out the door (literally). And, if you can see light around the edges of your doors or feel drafts coming from them, this number is likely even higher. Replacing your exterior doors will not only save you money in the long run, but they’ll give your home great curb appeal. So, how do you choose the most energy-efficient door?

Insulated Doors

When looking for a new exterior door, opt for durable materials like fiberglass or steel. Exterior doors also need to sure be insulated. Just like garage doors, an energy-efficient door should be made with a “thermal break.” Thermal breaks are designed to keep outside temperatures from being conducted through the door. In the winter, it keeps cold air out and hot air in. In the summer, just the opposite. The thermal break also aids in the prevention of moisture or frost on the inside of your door. If possible, opt for a thicker door, too.

Seals

Exterior doors with high energy efficiency should be equipped with effective seals around the perimeter. Many newer doors, like the ProVia EMBARQ® fiberglass entry door, are also equipped with a second seal which offers more protection against drafts and energy leaks. Sweeps should extend the entire length of the threshold and fit snugly.

Proper Installation

Even if you choose an energy-efficient door, you’re not guaranteed an energy-efficient result. To be sure you get the most out of your new door, rely on a professional for installation. Professionals will ensure your door is hung evenly, preventing gaps that cause drafts. If not fitted properly, you will still experience energy loss, even if your door checks all of the other boxes.
